What is ASME?
ASME or “American Society of Mechanical Engineers” is a professional association that, in its own words, “promotes the art, science, and practice of multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences around the globe” via “continuing education, training and professional development, codes and standards, research, conferences and publications, government relations, and other forms of outreach.” ASME is thus an engineering society, a standards organization, a research and development organization, a lobbying organization, a provider of training and education, and a nonprofit organization.
ASME Welding Certification
Welder certification through ASME is based on specifically designed tests to determine a welder’s skill and ability to deposit sound weld metal. The welder’s tests consist of many variables, including the specific welding process, type of metal, thickness, joint design, position, and others. Most often, the test is conducted in accordance with a particular code.
Welding, the process of permanently combining two metals, requires specialized training and certification. Just like individual welders obtain certification to earn legitimacy in the field, welding companies also get certifications. Certification is especially important for those companies that do specialized welding. Several industry associations and organizations offer certification for welding companies, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The Boiler and Pressure Vessel Certification offered by ASME provides welding companies with the know how and qualifications to work on boilers and pressure vessels.
Here at BWM, we strive to attain the highest levels of National Certification. We are currently members of the American Petroleum Institute (API) and The American Welding Society. We are working on getting our ASME verification and are looking forward to being able to serve the Brazos Valley better.
